Here's a trail system that has developed rather nicely over the years thanks to the efforts of the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC). I had not included these trails in my books because they are technically on private property (Massanutten Resort) and in order to ride you needed to pay a fee (still do).
The “Nutt” trails are a mountain biker's paradise, offering over 30 miles of varied terrain that cater to virtually all rider skill levels. The trails feature everything from gentle gravel roads and smooth rolling singletrack to fast, technical descents bound to satisfy the most advanced riders. This Wonderland has something for everyone.
The Western Slope trails are clearly marked and easy to follow. A comprehensive map is available from the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition..
MASSANUTTEN WESTERN SLOPE
Location: Keezletown, VA
Length: up to 32 miles
Ride Time: highly dependent on loop chosen; this route will take anywhere from 1.5 - 3 hours depending on ability
Ride Type: MTB
Difficulty: Level 4 Riding: The “Nutt” has something for everyone. This particular route is a great introduction to what the trail system has to offer and only scratches the surface for what’s available. I chose this loop because it provides a great intro and has smooth rolling singletrack, technical sections and enough climbing to get you to some great view points.
What is avoided are some of the more technical expert downhill trails that riders generally shuttle. If you are interested in those I highly recommend you reach out to the resort for details. Take Aim Cycling operates shuttle services for Massanutten and other areas of the George Washington National Forest.
In order to ride this amazing trail system you need to purchase either a Day or Annual Pass.
